We need to reinvent ourselves

A12.JPG

Q. I am a management student, currently working in a small firm. I am a very energetic girl but when it comes to studying (I am doing an MBA) I feel demoralised and get frustrated.

Comparisons come to us naturally

Q I’m an employee and have been writing the intermediate exams since 2008, however I have not been successful. Every year I prepare well but I can’t explain what happens.

Our beliefs separate us from the crowd

Q.I am a 15-year-old girl from Pune. My friends and my family are completely different and I find it very difficult to understand who I should be like. My parents are religious and have certain ideas of how one should be, whereas my friends are all about being modern and open-minded. I feel lost and this affects my studies and everything else.

Scrutinise the message

Well meaning advice is often misunderstood. And sometimes, actions too are misunderstood and misinterpreted. This is because few of us can actually come to grips with our egos and vanities and deficiencies. And sometimes we cannot understand the larger truths, not because we are not capable of grasping the essentials, but because we are clouded over and our perspectives are genuinely flawed.

How to cope with the loss of a loved one

Ten days ago, my father Pushkar-nath Kher passed away as I was aboard a flight to Goa. I had met him in the morning, as was my wont since he took ill two months ago and came to Mumbai for treatment, taking residence with my brother.

Believe in making lemonade

There is a famous adage which go-es: When life ser-ves you lemons, make lemonade. It means making the best of what you have, something that very few of us practise. Though we may all agree on the wisdom of such an approach, most of us go through life believing that the grass is always greener on the other side and that our neighbours have all the luck and we have all the misfortune.

Hope gives us courage to battle all odds in life

Most of us are called upon to play a role akin to God, twice in our lives. The first time is when we have children and as parents we have to train the infants about when to eat, how much to eat, how to go to the potty and such issues; all of which become laughable when they grow up. The second time around is when we have to parent our parents in their old age. This time, it is not laughable at all.

Be gracious in all situations

Many of us have more than one persona. What I mean to convey is that very few of us are consistent all through in different situations. There are thousands of men — I specifically refer to the male gender here as the syndrome is more common in males — who are peaceable folk except when they are stuck behind the wheel of a car in a traffic jam. That is when they become victims of road rage and behave like fiends.
