Sold on steals

fasion2.jpg

It is end-of-season sale time now. My friend claims she bought a Christian Dior python skin jacket which was originally priced at US $30,000 for US $900. Now that’s what I call a steal. I saw it. It is a soft beige short jacket which I think she will wear forever. It is a classic piece which can never date. I love it.

Pyjama party

You are not going to believe this. I am told that one of the foremost fashion trends this summer is pyjama-inspired daywear.

Easy breezy

All my friends seem to be on a hunt for the summer dress. With temperatures soaring everyone seems to want to look cool in a breezy dress. It is holiday time for most, as children break up for vacation and people are either choosing a beach holiday or a city break. Either way, a dress is the quickest and easiest way to look chic and with-it.

Crochet comeback

Crochet. Remember that knit type thing which was mum’s favourite leisure activity? I remember her making these white placemats with crochet. I used to find it fascinating as the needle went up and down creating pretty patterns in minutes. This is now a big fashion statement.

Fash faux pas turn stylish

There are certain trends this season which would be considered fashion faux pas until now. But they have suddenly turned stylish.
For example, double denim was a complete no-no until now. Not anymore. You can go out there wearing jeans and a T-shirt topped with a denim jacket and you would still be considered ‘with it’.

Foot fetishism

Summer sandals. Seductive. There is something about shoes which make them irresistible. I was watching a documentary on Tamara Mellon and she owns 600 pairs of shoes. Which is not that many considering she makes millions of shoes per year and dresses the entire universe of celebrities in her creations, and as the camera panned her entire walk-in closet, I did not notice a single style which was a repetition. Interesting.

Swinging seventies

Everything about the Seventies woman’s style is back. Those of you who are on the right side of 40 weren’t even born then. But the rest of us remember the look.
Kitten heels. Midi skirt. Floral blouse tucked into skirt. The hair parted in the centre. Round plastic sunglasses. Bell bottoms. Super-flared pants. All of it. If you are a

Midi revolution

There is hope for us ladies who do not have legs that go on forever. There is hope because we can hide our thunder thighs under a skirt. That’s because the midi skirt is back in vogue. Frumpy, did you say? Yeah girl, I am referring to the fuddy-duddy skirt which until now was so passé. This season if you want to be with-it, you gotta lay your hands on these knee-length skirts.

Return to 70s

Women finally wear the pants. The last few seasons have been dominated by the dress — from the long flowing maxi dress to the short mini number. This season’s catwalks were dominated by pants in various shapes and formats. There are straight wide-leg pants and harem pants. The spring runways had a plethora of these. Etro,

Hyper Colour

Hyper colour is officially a trend this spring. As the cold, cold winter slips into spring, everyone is looking forward to warmer months and a change in the mood of the wardrobe. Colour is what the western world is waking up to now, something we were familiar with in India forever. We as Indians know that colour makes us happy. A happy colour reflects the mind-set of the person wearing it. A dull colour reflects a dull mind.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
