Pyjama party

You are not going to believe this. I am told that one of the foremost fashion trends this summer is pyjama-inspired daywear.

Yes, we have all seen lacy tank tops which look more like nightwear worn as outerwear. We digested this sleepwear-as daywear trend. Sort of. But pyjamas! This one did leave me dumb-struck. I understand that we are over that tight-fitted look where we squeeze ourselves into one size too small; but this is taking comfort too far. Feeling relaxed is fine at home but taking this trend to the streets…what can I say.
Willow pants, also called harem pants, have caught on in a big way. When I was passing by the trouser section at a store, I thought I had entered the nightwear department. Apparently not. I was at the right place only looking for an outdated cut i.e. a normal straight trouser. Yes, you will see willow pants everywhere.
River Island has done floral willows. Their promo models team it with loose floral matching top. The look is sleep-inspiring for me. I have seen willows in beige, black, orange and bright blue on the high street. The fork hangs down to the knees. That’s how it is meant to be. Gap has done them not only baggy but with the drawstring, making the pyjama illusion even more pronounced.
Anthropologie revels in this shaggy baggy look. Poncho style tops, peasant blouses. Honestly, they remind me of grandma in her house gown. But who knows. We all start by moaning about a trend and rejecting it but slowly get used to it and then adopt it. They have fan-leg cropped pants and wide-leg pants in which the flares go on for ever. They are elasticated on the waist rather than zipped or buttoned.
Is it a summer thing to be loose and flowy or is this the future? Hopefully, the former. They have done culottes with huge flares too. Imagine what they will make you look like in the wind.
Maje, River Island and Elizabeth&James have done baggy jackets which hang loose on a top and give a casual look.
Long dresses too have drawn inspiration from the pyjamas. Donna Karan, Thakoon and Cavalli. The easy breezy long dresses are fine on a beach but what about those of us who have normal day jobs. Can we really float into office in a floaty number?

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
