Midi revolution

There is hope for us ladies who do not have legs that go on forever. There is hope because we can hide our thunder thighs under a skirt. That’s because the midi skirt is back in vogue. Frumpy, did you say? Yeah girl, I am referring to the fuddy-duddy skirt which until now was so passé. This season if you want to be with-it, you gotta lay your hands on these knee-length skirts.

Not for a moment am I saying that the sexy pencil skirt is out-dated or the mini needs to be sent for recycling. Or that the micro-mini should not be adorned. Just that the midi is a staple that women have yearned. It has an undying feminine appeal which has stood the test of time. Since designer brands did not make them for the last few years; nor were they available in the high street, numerous vintage shops have consistently reported the demand for knee-length dresses and skirts.
The Selfridges show window had them on display for two weeks and then I knew that this trend was a full blown revolution. Versace has a collection of midi dresses which are fabulous as they have the curves and the length to creative the illusion of slender-ness.
Dolce and Gabbana have a beautiful lace version. Diane von Furstenburg has done them in the halter dress format in striking prints. Missoni has always stuck to this genre of skirts possible because their collection is aimed at an older age group of ladies. They have their new cashmere styles which are wearable and classic. Oasis has a denim take on this trend. There are front button down version on the high street to be worn with a tucked in top.
These skirts need not be boring. They can be de-frumped if worn in bright colours or floral prints. Geometric flashes, polka dotted or embroidered. The look works if paired well. Warehouse and Whistles have made the skirt in a structured tailored look which brings out the smart ‘secretary’ look. Designers have made them with a twist. Peek-a-boo lace interspersed with satin or printed chiffon.
When something becomes a bestseller on asos.com or mywardrobe.com, you now that the college girl has given the trend a thumbs up. And it is time to take notice.
The midi is the ultimate look for a summer picnic — pale pink pleated midi skirt and white top. A straw hat and sunglasses complete the picture. Picture perfect.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
