The Cabinet committee on economic affairs on Thursday approved the proposal for initiation of second phase of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP).

Cabinet OKs bill to make divorce easy

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the introduction of the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2010 to further amend the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, and the Special Marriage Act, 1954, to provide “irretrievable break down of marriage” as a ground of divorce.

Recession boost to environment

Call it the law of unintended consequences, but some good may have come out of the sub-prime mess created by Wall Street.
The 2008-09 recession probably did more for the global environment than any climate change summit or agreement. The recession hit world economy saw its energy consumption, and hence greenhouse effect causing carbon dioxide emissions, shrink by 1.1 per cent during 2009.

Bharti gets low rating

International rating agency Standard & Poor’s on Wednesday lowered Bharti Airtel’s rating due to the large debt which the company had taken to finance its acquisition of Zain’s African assets. Bharti’s shares, however, were up by five per cent on the stock market and was one of the top gainers.

Centre to list 35 PSUs, targets Rs 1.5 lakh cr

The government is hoping to reap a bonanza from the disinvestment of public sector units (PSUs). The Union minister of state for heavy industry and public sector enterprises, Mr Arun Yadav, said on Wednesday that the government would list 35 public sector companies on the stock markets over the next five years.
