In a unique display of creativity, students these days are merging their college festivals with a noble social causes. Students at Xavier’s college Mumbai, have displayed one such act and indulged in a much needed clean up drive.
As part of the on-going preliminary rounds for the college festival Malhar students here combined their contests with a social cause activity called “Chakachak”. Contingents from 16 colleges all across the country got together at the city’s public spaces and swept it clean of all its rubbish. The contestants were given 90 minutes to collect the garbage and segregate it into recyclable and non-recyclable categories. After two whole hours of a dirty, sweaty cleaning up drive, the students gathered a whopping 1841.5 kg of garbage. While 1129 kg of the waste were recyclable, the other 712 kgs were non-recyclable. The collected waste was sent to the city's municipality to take care of.
Says Ankiti Bose, Chairperson of the festival, “Our college college has taken up the cause of garbage segregation and this event has taken it a step forward and involved many colleges. It culminated into a hugely successful event and we would like to thank all the participatingcolleges for their involvement and support. This effectively marked the beginning of the Malhar Social Cause, and we are very proud and happy about the way it turned out.”
Another participant, Vijaylaxmi Srinivas said, “It was a great experience being a part of something so unique. The filth at public places makes me want to take up a broom and start cleaning and today I actually did it! What’s better is I had 60 odd people from all over the country with me and we were all doing it as we repersentated our colleges and had fun.”
