Dig it: Wheeler Dealers
Relics of cars run down to rust, bolts, grease, paint and rubber are restored and transformed into spanking new beauties. The magician behind this is Edd China, mechanic extraordinaire. Co-host of Wheeler Dealers, on Discovery Turbo, Edd is the grease monkey magician, while Mike Brewer fronts the show.
The pair finds old cars, and buys and repairs them on a budget. Once repaired, Mike attempts to sell the car. The half-hour programme sees Mike scour the Internet or phone books for the car he wants and then meet the seller. The way in which the actual buying is done is fun to watch.
Personally, I’m terrible at bargaining, so I get huge satisfaction (and pick up tips!) from watching Mike strike deals for the cars. His mannerisms and humour (and Brit accent!) make the scenes even more enjoyable. Mike takes the cars out for a drive and explains a lot of the unique features of the cars. At the garage, Mike tries to convince Edd that the car is worth working on (Mike has to try hard).
Once the real work starts, it gets really interesting. Edd sets about repairing the car, while constantly narrating his actions and listing useful techniques and such. It’s great to see the end result of a car that looks brand new. The final deal is done when Mike does his wheeling and dealing and sells the car (usually at a profit).
For those grease monkeys, do-it-yourself types and car enthusiasts, this show is not to be missed.
