Inseparable BFFs the new youth rage

Vanessa Hazel Pinto, a college student, has just fought with her boyfriend. The first thing she does is call up her BFF, Deane D’Souza and vent her feelings to this sympathetic listener.
This is a familiar, oft-played-out scenario with most girls and their BFFs, the only difference is that, for some girls, their lives revolve around their BFFs. They are constantly calling up the BFF and updating her/him on the ups and downs, joys and disappointments, of their daily lives. For many girls, the day starts by talking to this person and ends only after talking to this same person.
Vanessa describes it as follows, “I have been seeing my boyfriend for about six years, but with us, it has always been a long distance relationship. I do not generally talk to my boyfriend about the tiny things that make me angry or make me smile during the day. These details are exclusively reserved for that one special friend of mine, Deane, whom I can call at any time of the day to vent or even just to share my joy.”
Girls getting more dependent on their BFFs and doing fine without their boyfriends seems to be the norm of late. Deepika Ajith, a college student, says, “For me, it’s always been my cousin, Sunaina Menon, who has been my pillar of strength. I call her when I’m happy, I call her when I’m sad, I just talk to her all the time. She has been someone I could rely on to get through the tough times in my life. At times, I feel, even if I had a boyfriend, he would never be able to be there for me, the way Sunaina is there for me. She is the perfect definition of ‘Best Friends Forever’ and the bond I share with her is something that I definitely can never share with anyone else.”
The BFF doesn’t necessarily have to be only of the female gender. But a BFF who is male can cause jealousy among boyfriends. Neisha Nair, a class 12 student, says, “Somehow I find myself more comfortable around boys and can almost never have a proper conversation with a girl. There is this one friend who I am really close to, I call him at least seven times a day and vice-versa. The funniest thing about us is that we call each other about the most random stuff, from ‘I ate the most awesome breakfast,’ to ‘My BF/GF does not understand me’. Initially, my boyfriend was a little insecure because I spoke way too much to my friend and he suddenly started feeling a little neglected, but he eventually understood and, surprisingly, both of them get along pretty well now!”
