Laksh’s the man
He is the new poster-boy of Hyderabad. Lakshman Reddy, who recently won the Mr World title in the Musclemania World Bodybuilding Pro Championships in Las Vegas, USA, tells the story of a person who rose to prominence after bearing many hardships.
Hailing from a poor family in Peddamberpet, Lakshman played volleyball when he was young. “I played volleyball for sometime. It was in 1999-2000 that I started bodybuilding but took it seriously in the last six to seven years,” Lakshman said in a chat with this newspaper.
Despite not having the cushion of sponsors, Lakshman displayed his mettle, winning a host of titles. He was Mr Hyderabad in 2009 and 2010, Mr Secunderabad 2008; Mr Greater Hyderabad 2008 to name a few.
“It was not easy. I did not have the money and whatever money was earned, I used it up in shaping myself. Bodybuilding is my passion and whenever I won a competition, I aspired for winning at a higher level. I gave this my all,” Lakshman said. On the preparation before the event at Las Vegas, Lakshman said, “Kunal Gir was my personal coach during the preparations. We had intense sessions and I was put on a high protein diet. Kunal helped me reduce 53 lbs which was of immense help in the final analysis.”
On the competition, the Hyderabadi said, “There were bodybuilders from across the world were taking part. It was quite intense.”
Lakshman reduced his water intake drastically a week before the event so as to improve body muscularity. “It was physically exhausting to even stand on the stage during the final round,” he said. However, despite winning the Mr World title, Lakshman rues the lack of funds.
“Government support could be of great help. Corporate sponsorships too could come handy,” Lakshman said. The road ahead may be steep, but Lakshman is ready to sweat it out and flex his muscles to win many more laurels.
