Tunes change with moods
For self-expression-crazy teenagers there’s never been a better time than now — in addition to t-shirt slogans, Twitter updates and status messages, you can now ‘wear your attitude’ with a caller tune. Whacky jokes, sexy voice recordings or romantic serenades, they’ve come a long way from the boring ‘ring ring’. What’s more, enthusiastic teens are now changing their caller tunes as often as once in three days to match their moods and to let people calling in ‘face the music’.
Hanan Shireen, 17, has a new caller tune practically every week. She’s dubbed it her ‘emotion of the day’, “Caller tunes are a fun way to express what is on your mind. I hardly ever stick to the same caller tune, one has to change with times. It keeps my friends guessing as to what the mood is. My friend who’s crazy about FIFA can’t wait to pick the anthem as his caller tune. Another has a generic tune that plays for everybody, but has chosen to keep a romantic song just for his girlfriend. My brother had a Quick Gun Murugan caller tune that was hilarious, people would call it just to listen to the Mind It!”
A few quirky teenagers have tweaked their caller tunes and come up with brilliant pranks. Ritika Samtaney, a student of St Mary’s college says, “I called my pal up on his mobile and some guy was bellowing on the other end in some unknown language. I thought either I’d got the wrong number or his phone’s not working. It was only later that I discovered that it was a caller tune and we had a laugh about it.” Mayank Gupta, 18, says, “I was amazed how one of my friends had a caller tune that had a very sensual voice leading on a conversation. His dad was shocked out of his wits when he called my friend.” And if birds of a feather flock together, then some flocks even like to sing the same tune. Himank Dutt, 18, reveals, “My friends and I are big fans of Metallica and decided to put Nothing Else Matters as our caller tune. After a while, we’ll keep different songs of the same band on shuffle.”
