A show for the eclectic

Collectors, connoisseur and dilettante both, are the backbone of art. Without their support, whims, knowledge and deep pockets neither artists, nor the galleries who are in the business of art, would survive. Of course, there are collectors who have an exclusive interest in particular artist or an era, but then there are the more eclectic collectors who buy art based on genres, or colour or figuration and more often than not, the name and price tag of an artist.
The Collector’s Weekend organised by seven art galleries of Lado Sarai — Abadi Art Space, Art Positive, Art Motif, Exhibit 320, Studio Art, Latitude 28, and Wonderwall aims at this brand of the buyer. The concept is based on creating ‘an inspiring and friendly atmosphere in which one can find thousands of original paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs all under one roof, between a price bracket of `3000 to `3,00,000.’
And it seems to have worked, as Bhavna Kakkar, director of Latitude 28 says that buyers were particularly enthused by the transparency of galleries as they put up the prices along with details of the painting/print right next to it. This allows the discerning buyer to spot a bargain immediately, be it a serigraph of known artists such as Parmajit Singh or a print by Anupam Sud. Original works by Seema Kohli and Manu Prarekh stood in juxtaposition with new mediatic works by Sandeep Biswas and other artists whereby all tastes were catered to. Galleries displayed their inventories to make this a collector centered enterprise whereby transparency becomes the key as against the hype of a particular work/ artist’s having sought a very high price in an auction. This transparency and affordability is perhaps the way ahead for a sustainable and if one can be hopeful, a self regulated Indian Art market.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
