The Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences here, has said that the condition of Swathi Krishna, the 16-year old girl who had undergone a liver transplant surgery following organ failure, was improving.
Though still in a coma, her body had started responding to the surgical procedures.

According to a hospital release, Swathi’s body and eyelids had started showing slight movement. However, the girl, a plus -two student at MKM Higher Secondary School, Piravom, would be under close observation for the next 48 hours.

Hospital sources said the chances of infection were very high and it would be difficult to get the new part of the liver to start functioning.

Her immunity would also be very low and the treatment for hepatitis would also have to continue for a few more days.

A four-member team of doctors at AIMS, headed by Dr Sudhindra Nath, performed the 12-hour-long surgery on Friday. Dr Dinesh Balakrishnan, Dr Ramachandran, Dr Binoj, Dr Biju, anesthesiologists Dr Lakshmi, Dr Rajesh, Dr Jyothi, Dr Priya and other paramedical staff were also part of the team.
Swathi was admitted to AIMS with liver complication two weeks ago after a hepatitis attack took a bad turn.

Two days ago, the doctors pronounced her liver dead and she was shifted to a ventilator.
On Friday, an urgent meeting of the state medical board at the instruction of health minister V.S. Sivakumar cleared the application of Swathi’s aunt, Rainy Joy, expressing her willingness to donate her liver to her niece.

On Thursday night, Rainy had submitted an affidavit before the second class judicial magistrate in Kochi, saying she was donating the liver of her own and without any pecuniary benefit, to save the life of her sister’s daughter.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
