Councillors fight over ad tenders

The Opposition in the Kochi Corporation has sought the resignation of mayor Tony Chammany in connection with the alleged irregularities in the allotment of tenders for advertisements displayed on street lamp posts.

The council meeting held on Thursday was an unruly one after the opposition members rejected the reply given by the mayor on the issue. The opposition members stormed onto the podium of the council hall and disrupted the meeting.

Opposition councillor C.A. Shakeer raised the issue at the commencement of the meeting and demanded that the mayor reply.

The opposition had earlier demanded a vigilance inquiry into the issue, but the mayor had refused to give in to their demand. He told the council that the concerned standing committees would look into the matter.

“The agency authorised to display advertisements will be called for a hearing on October 11 by the finance committee,” the mayor informed the council.

This wasn’t good enough for the opposition. Members started shouting slogans and prevented the mayor from proceeding with other matters of the council. Later on, the opposition staged a dharna in front of the corporation office.
