Futile Ferrari gesture
No gesture could have been more futile than the solidarity the Ferrari team is trying to show with the Italian Marines charged with the gunning down of two Indian fishermen on the high seas.
The display of the Italian Navy flag on the flashy red racing car is so insignificant as to have gone unnoticed if not for foolish seeking of publicity by the team ahead of the Indian Grand Prix to be run today at the Buddh international circuit.
Where was the need to bring politics into sport? Scuderia Ferrari saying that the initiative has no political implication should not fool anyone. The shooting down of Indian nationals is a matter for an Indian court to decide and it is a mystery how the high-octane world of Formula One sport allowed itself to be involved in this.
While the Italian government has every right to take up the issue at the diplomatic level, it’s a moot point why the motor racing authority allows such a gesture on its race track. If not for the importance of the second Grand Prix on our soil dwarfing the machinations of the Italians, India would be viewing this as an abuse of hospitality. The apolitical code of sport has been breached and the Italians need to answer. Of course, it would be belittling the Indian judicial system to even suggest this would influence the course of justice in a complicated case of action at sea.
