Centre gives priority to healthcare, says Vasan
Healthcare is one of the main priorities for the UPA government, Union minister G.K. Vasan said on Sunday, referring to the significant mark-up of the Union health budget this year.
Speaking at the dedication ceremony of the Dr Rema Mohan Campus, Mr Vasan said, “This year, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee has allocated Rs 34,488 crore for the health sector, a 13 per cent mark-up from last year’s sum.”
Mr Vasan dedicated Dr Mohan’s hospital campus at Gopalapuram as the Dr Rema Mohan Campus, and unveiled a bust of the late ophthalmologist.
Dr Rema Mohan, co-founder of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre (DMDSC) and vice-president and director of eye research of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) here passed away on March 25, 2011. She was one of the first diabetologists in the country to start research on diabetic retinopathy.
On her first death anniversary on Sunday ‘The Rema Mohan Museum’ which displays a collection of well-preserved photographs, certificates, awards, ophthalmic instruments and other memorabilia, was inaugurated by the minister.
Dr Mohan Rajan, chairman, Rajan Eyecare hospital, announced that Dr Rema Mohan gold medals would be awarded annually to outstanding medicos from the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.
