SC to courts: No leniency in rapes
In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court on Tuesday held that compromise between a victim of rape and the perpetrator should not be a ground for awarding lesser punishment to the convict as this trend exhibits “stark insensitivity to the need for proportionate punishment”.

Man wanted in 31 kidnap cases arrested
The Madiwala police has arrested the “most wanted” kidnapper, Janardhanachari, alias Babu, alias Ravi, who allegedly kidnapped and robbed minor girls. In some cases, he had also allegedly raped the girls. In the last two months, he was involved in 31 kidnap cases, the police said.

CBI, in SC, pushes chief’s autonomy
Maintaining that its demand for autonomy and more powers to its director are legitimate, the CBI in its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday reiterated that the chief of the agency should be given more administrative, financial and disciplinary powers to enable him to discharge his duties efficiently.
Centre: 189 coal files unavailable
The Centre filed an affidavit before the SC saying that 189 out of 236 documents sought by the CBI are “not available”.
