Change proactively

The results of transformative change are all around us this summer. Sunflower plants busting out from seeds where they have slept tightly curled, butterflies leaving behind their worn out cocoons, flowers dressing up the bare limbs of trees. This time as the financial year begins; it is the time for proactive change.

Celebrate Summer

Summer is waiting, crouching in the shadows to leap upon us with an orange roar of colour, heat and sweat. In the drama of the four seasons, summer is the brightest. The Kashmir valley celebrates the Tulip festival in April at Siraj Bagh, clasped in embrace of the scenic Zabrawan range in Srinagar. Nearly 60 varieties of beautiful tulips worship the sun in over five hectares of land.

Women are special

Mothers, sisters, daughters and other women beloved to us make March 8 a special day. A day to show respect and appreciation to all the women.

Value that human touch

Our lives revolve around love. Next week my grandson will be one-year-old. His little nostrils flare at the fragrance of a flower. His perfect limbs stretch in strange flexible asanas and he does everything with noisy enthusiasm. He gazes up at the light and smiles to strange dreams. We are his puppets on a string.

Use Money to buy happiness

You get by giving, say the ancient texts. You can get happiness by giving, echoes the latest research. “Love of money is the root of all evil,” says the holy book.

Balance of give and take

You can create a sustainable environment around you. This happens when you treat the earth like a friend. Replace whatever you take from her with love. We need to stop doing many things to achieve a sustainable, clean environment. No plastic bags, no empty shampoo sachets. Carry a cloth bag.

Strive hard for the Gold

In the year 1900, India first participated in the Olympic Games. Our lone athlete, Norman Pritchard, won two silver medals. Today, 112 years later, Indian athletes have won a total of 22 medals, mostly in field hockey. The London Olympics has an Indian contingent of 83 members participating in 55 events.

Laughter & Tears

“It is alright to cry,” said tennis star, winner of the Wimbledon Open at the moment of victory. In years past, tears were forbidden to men and even professional women. Roger Federer made this liberating statement, as his two three-year old twin daughters and wife were watching him.

See God in every particle

The discovery of the Higgs boson particle (let’s not forget ‘boson’ which is named after an Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose) or the ‘God particle’ makes us see ancient wisdom in a new light. God is in every particle, of every single thing is what it means, when our Vedas say, Aham Brahmasmi! The Geeta says, ‘God penetrates and interpenetrates every living and non-living thing’.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
