Television’s sweetheart

Shruti Sheth was impossibly cute as a teenage witch in Shararat. Seen in a host of TV and film appearances in the time since, the actress was recently roped into the fantasy show Baal Veer.
“Baal Veer is a popular show and my role as Rani Pari is very much on the lines of a fairy godmother. I love the idea of a powerful fairy and the show and my character are very child-centric, which is why I was immediately to do the role,” Shruti says.
Shruti says the character is quite different from the one she played in Shararat. “In Shararat, my character couldn’t really use her magic without goofing up and her family would usually come to the rescue. In Baal Veer on the other hand, I know exactly how to use my powers,” she explains.
The actress admits that she’s hugely fascinated by the world of fantasy and magic is a huge fan of both the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises. “However, my earliest association with magic began with the fairy tale of Cinderella,” she says with a smile. “I remember watching it and being absolutely smitten by the entire possibility of magic existing. I still hold that movie extremely close to my heart.”
On a more real world note, the actress confirms that she has been signed on to host the upcoming season of Comedy Circus Ke Mahabali, thus continuing an association that started with the show’s first season back in 2007. As the host, Shruti’s often ribbed unmercifully, but she takes it all in good humour. “Doing the Comedy Circus show is sort of like being at home for me. The team is very close knit and we always enjoy a good laugh. The show may be on air for only 45 minutes, but we take almost two to three hours to film it, and it’s always very entertaining,” Shruti shares.
While Shuti is closest to Archana Puran Singh (from the Comedy Circus “family”) and often goes shopping and dining out with her, the show has given her a chance to build a great rapport with the Khan family as well — Sohail and Arbaaz especially — and she tells us, “They’re wonderful and very warm-hearted.”
Her bubby persona makes her a shoo-in in the charm sweepstakes, and this actress tells us that she always tries to maintain a balance between the roles she plays on film and television. “I’m really glad with the image that I have maintained on TV, bubbly and sweet. My shows have largely catered to kids and I love that because children are the most honest fan base you can have,” Shruti says. As for the role she’s always wanted to play, pat comes the reply: “I’ve always wanted to play Trinity from Matrix.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
