Got time, burst a word bubble
After reading my recent piece on Orchard (Think Tank Games), Deepa tried her hand at the brain numbing puzzle, and mailed me some pictures of her horticulture-in-progress. I was duly impressed with her endeavour. But less so with her rather obviously misaligned rows of trees. She’d gotten further than I ever did. And assures me she’ll keep at it, till she figures how to plant five rows of four trees, using up to ten trees of each of the species. More power to her!
After a gloriously intense work day, I needed a pick-me-up. Something that only a satisfying word game could provide. I logged in to lumosity.com and marvelled at the site built on the premise that frequent workouts will improve Brain Performance Index (BPI). The index tracks my performance in five cognitive areas: Attention, memory, speed, flexibility and problem solving. If you’re competitive, see how you fare in percentile ranking against people in your age group.
I didn’t sign up for the $6.70 per month plan, so couldn’t access a treasure trove of grey cell stimulants. Content with free access, I thoroughly enjoyed three round sessions of “Word Bubbles”, racing against a timer to make words starting with three random letters. An impressive set of scientific paper references authoritatively claim the game helps build verbal fluency, and out-of-the-box thinking. Bubbles rose corresponding to the length of the words I made. I succumbed to brain freeze with “whe”, but did better with “div”. Give it a go. It’s a happy bubble. And you’ll get cleverer as well!
