Somdev loses ‘friendly’ encounter to Isner
Somdev Devvarman bowed out of the Washington Open after going down in straight sets to eighth seeded American John Isner in the third round here. The unseeded Indian lost 5-7, 5-7 to his “good friend” in what was their first encounter on the circuit.
Faced with an opponent ranked more than 100 places above him in the ATP list, Somdev fought well in the opening set, saving as many as six break points.
Isner will next face Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in the quarter-final.
After opening with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over US wildcard Jack Sock, Nishikori was thrashed by 16th-seeded Baghdatis 6-1, 6-2 in only 58 minutes.
Juan Martin Del Potro, playing twice in one day for the first time in his career, also reached the quarter-finals with two straight-set triumphs.
The 2009 US Open winner dispatched American Ryan Harrison 6-1, 7-5 in 70 minutes, then returned five hours later to eliminate Australian 14th seed Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-3 in 69 minutes.
Bopanna, Begemann shock top seeds
Rohan Bopanna and his new German partner Andre Begemann knocked out the top seeded pair of Alexendra Peya and Bruno Soares to storm into the quarter-finals.
Bopanna, playing with his eighth partner of the season, shocked the top seeds 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-5 in the opening round of the hard court event.
They next face Treat Huey of Philippines and Briton Dominic Inglot in the quarter-finals.
Radwanska sisters reach quarters
In Carlsbad, second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska set up a quarter-final clash with Samanth Stosur with a straight-sets win over Daniela Hantuchova. Poland’s Radwanska defeated Hantuchova 6-3, 6-3. She was joined in the quarter-finals by younger sister Urszula, a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 winner over sixth-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic.
