Hewitt dethrones Federer
Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt defeated top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland to lift the ATP grass-court tournament here on Sunday.
Eighth seed Hewitt rallied from a set down to beat five-time Halle champ Federer 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4. Hewitt, the 2002 Wimbledon champion, moved closer to 100 grass-court match wins as he improved to a 98-23.
Querrey triumphs
London: Sam Querrey defeated fellow American Mardy Fish 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 in the final of the ATP tour grass-court event at Queen’s Club on Sunday.
Li Na beats Sharapova
Birmingham: Top seed Li Na of China won the WTA Birmingham title at Edgbaston and returned to the world’s top 10 after beating second-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova 7-5, 6-1 here on Sunday.
In a close first set Li found herself 1-3 down but rallied before taking the second set in just 24 minutes for what was the 24-year-old’s third career title.
Sania advances
Eastbourne: India’s Sania Mirza beat Jocelyn Rae 6-1, 6-2 to progress to the third and final round of the qualifying event of the WTA Aegon International.
Bopanna loses
New Delhi: Rohan Bopanna’s hopes of making the main draw of the Unicef Open in s’Hertogenbosch, Netherlands were punctured by 4-6, 4-6 defeat at the hands of Jamaican Dustin Brown. — Agencies
