Kumble, Sri, Venky in fray
Bengaluru, Nov. 2: The much-anticipated Karnataka State Cricket Association elections took a spin on Tuesday, with Brijesh Patel deciding not to contest in the November 21 polls.
Patel, a former India batsman, has been the secretary for the last 12 years, but in a surprising move decided to withdraw from the elections. With just 19 days to go for the elections, it became clear that former national stars Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad, who were rumoured to be in the fray, would actually contest the polls.
As it turned out, Patel in a statement on Tuesday, said he was supporting Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad and even an active player in Rahul Dravid.
“I have decided to step aside and not contest the ensuing elections and support the young distinguished Test cricketers Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Rahul Dravid and others in the coming elections who have pledged to take KSCA forward in the coming challenging years,” the statement read.
Now the likely scenario is that Kumble will contest for the president’s post with Srinath running for secretary against the faction led by serving president Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar.
Sujith Somasunder and Vijay Bharadwaj will also contest in various capacities.
