India against umpire review system

New Delhi, July 9: The controversial Umpire Decision Review System will not be used in the India-Sri Lanka Test series starting on July 18 as the BCCI was not in favour of it, according to a Sri Lanka Cricket official.

SLC Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said since India does not want the UDRS, it will not be used in the three-match Test series.

“The decision at the ICC meeting was that both the teams should agree with having the DRS system. When we checked with India, they were not happy to have it,” Ranatunga told a cricket website.

Asked if the absence of DRS would be a disadvantage for Sri Lanka, Ranatunga said, “Definitely it will be a disadvantage. Not only for Sri Lanka, it’s a disadvantage for India as well. It’s a disadvantage for all the players.”

In its recent annual conference, the ICC had said that the host country would determine whether to use DRS in home Test series following consultation with the visiting country.

The DRS was used during India’s tour of Sri Lanka in 2008 and that became a point of controversy, including a contentious Virender Sehwag dismissal. Sri Lanka made 11 successful reviews in their 2-1 series win, as opposed to India's one. In Sri Lanka’s return tour of India, the DRS was not used and captain Kumar Sangakkara, whose side lost the series 0-2, was not happy with that. India haven’t been involved in any series which used DRS since the series Sri Lanka in 2008.
