Diwakar eases into semifinals
New Delhi, July 14: Commonwealth champion Amandeep Singh and Olympian Diwakar Prasad reached the semifinals of the 57th Senior National boxing championships with contrasting wins at the Talkatora Stadium here on Wednesday.
Railways Sports Promotion Board’s Prasad (60kg) put on another clinical performance to beat Jammu & Kashmir’s Deepak 6-0.
The referee had to stop the contest midway through the third round when one of Prasad’s several attacks left Deepak with a cut above his left eye.
Prasad will now face reigning youth world champion Vikas Krishan, who easily defeated Uttarakhand’s Amit Kumar 5-0.
In contrast, Amandeep, of Railways, was given a tough fight by Asian Youth silver medallist Devendro Singh in the light flyweight (49kg) quarterfinals. The first round ended 0-0 with the 18-year-old Manipuri not conceding a single point with his tight defence but as the bout progressed, Devendro lost the tempo.
