Closing event promises to be youth-centric
Johannesburg, July 10: The curtain will fall on a riveting and successful Fifa World Cup with an elaborate closing ceremony. Just like the event that has seen the old order being overthrown by a fresh, vibrant bunch, the closing ceremony will be “youthful and full of vibe”.
Unlike the traditional African theme witnessed during the opening ceremony on June 11, organisers said the closing ceremony will be a more energetic and youthful affair.
LOC chief marketing officer Derek Carsten said the organisers wanted to leave a lasting legacy that will “tell a story” rather than just be the ending of a Fifa tournament.
“Its not only about the stars and the tournament, it’s also about the story of our country. It’s going to be a function that will be celebrating our country, the fan experience and the celebration of the event,” said Carsten. “We will be celebrating the traditions of the country in a very unique way,” he added.
Hollywood and Bollywood film stars are also expected to turn up for the grand event, with Oscar winning South African actress Charlize Theron expected to be seated with Shah Rukh Khan in the same VIP pavilion.
However, there was no update on the presence of possibly the biggest draw — former President Nelson Mandela.
