Webber eyes a strong finish
Sept. 23: Red Bull’s Mark Webber is banking on a strong result in Singapore to keep his world championship dreams on track, knowing a failure to finish could prove fatal.
The Australian leads a tight championship race by five points from McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, with Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel all within striking distance with five Grand Prix to go.
Webber hasn’t had much luck in Singapore, with his 2009 race wrecked by brake failure while the year before an electric charge from a passing subway train was bizarrely blamed for a gearbox meltdown.
He plans to do better this time. “I’ve had a gearbox and a brake failure here, but Brazil was also a rubbish track for me in the past and I won there, so I’ve been ticking a few boxes,” said the 34-year-old.
“I’m leading the championship but it’s still very interesting. It’s certainly a nice position to be in, but it doesn’t matter if there are two or five guys chasing, I just have to do my job,” he said. Thoug Webber and teammate Vettel have never won the drivers’ title, Alonso, Hamilton and Button all have. But the Australian doesn’t think it gives them an advantage.
“It’s slightly uncharted waters for us and there’s a degree of inexperience, but of course we are incredibly hungry for it and we realise how unique this is for the team,” he said.
