Narain outpaces Karun and teammate Tonio
Narain Karthikeyan pipped his teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi to finish 22nd in the Friday free practice session for the weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix.
The Indian ace drove 29 laps and came with a best effort of 1:31.320 — 0.669 seconds ahead of Italian Liuzzi, who did 30 laps.
Earlier, the first practice witnessed a slice of history when two Indian drivers Narain and Karun Chandhok hit the track together for the first time at a grand prix weekend. It was Narain who came on top in ‘battle of Indian drivers’ as the 32-year-old outpaced the 25-year-old Karun by 3.2 seconds.
Team Lotus reserve Karun was given time in the car instead of Finland’s Heikki Kovalainen. In his first outing with Lotus at Melbourne, Karun crashed at the very first lap.
Karun said the wet weather limited his morning run. “Despite that it was good to get back out on the track. I didn’t get a chance to push but I’m enjoying my work with the team,” he said.
Narain is happy with the updates on the car. “The team is going in the right direction. I need to get some laps under my belt on this track because last time I drove in Istanbul (2005) it was a disaster,” he added.
