JK tyre national racing: Grit pays off for Feroze
Suffering from a rare disorder hemophilia which causes excessive bleeding even if there is a slight scratch, Feroze Khan knows he’s playing with fire in the dangerous world of motorsport. But as former national champion Ayub Khan’s son, his blood has another unique characteristic — a passion for car racing.
The Chennai youngster, who cut his racing teeth only two years ago, took centre stage at the opening round of the 15th JK Tyre National Racing Championship at Kari Motor Speedway on Sunday. At the end of an eventful weekend Feroze is on top of the leaderboard in the Indian Junior Touring Car class with 43 points.
“What is life without risks?” Feroze quips about his determination to pursue racing as a career despite his medical condition.
The victory in the second race came as a surprise for Feroze who finished the 15-lap affair in the second position behind Md Fahad Kutty. The Mumbai racer Fahad was eliminated from classification after his vehicle was found to have breached a technical regulation at the post-race scrutiny. Feroze now enjoys a 10-point lead over defending champion S. Diljith.
The senior class — Super Saloon — produced entertaining action. In an incident-filled race that was red-flagged twice, B. Vijaykumar held his nerve to emerge victorious ahead of Bala Vijay and N. Leelakrishnan.
The first incident was a six-car pile-up. Deepak Paul Chinappa, M. Sivaramakrishnan, C. Rajaram, Jagat Nanjappa, G.D. Rajkumar and Anant Pithawalla were the victims of a chain reaction.
The second incident happened immediately at the restart with Siddharth Kishore and D. Vidyaprakash being eliminated. The race that started with 19 cars ended with only nine taking the chequered flag.
“The restarts were a test of my starting skills. I stuck to my place after the last start and it was a procession from then on,” said Vijaykumar.
In Volkswagen Polo Cup, Avdumber Hede and Mexican guest driver Deigo Duez shared the honours by winning the Race 1 and 2 respectively. The second round will be held at the same venue on July 28 and 29.
