A Pakistani court on Saturday awarded the death sentence to Mumtaz Qadri for assassinating Pakistan Punjab governor Salman Taseer in January this year, court officials said. The anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi found Mumtaz Qadri, a police commando, guilty of murder.
Mumtaz Qadri, one of the slain governor’s bodyguards, was charged with terrorism and murdering the man he was supposed to be protecting in Kohsar Market, Islamabad, on January 4.
The convict had confessed to killing Salman Taseer, saying he objected to the politician’s calls to amend the blasphemy law.
