Police in Bengaluru have booked a case of abetment to suicide under section 306 of the IPC against the boy allegedly linked to 22-year-old Malini Murmu's suicide at the city's IIM campus.
Murmu, a first year student at the prestigious institution, is believed to have left behind a suicide note explaining her heartbreak after being dumped by her boyfriend - who also wrote about it on Facebook saying 'feeling super cool today. Dumped my new ex-girlfriend. Happy independence day'.
"She got rejected after some issues with her boyfriend. Preliminary investigations say that the girl was dumped by her boyfriend on Facebook. We are still investigating into the case," Aditional Commissioner of Police (law and order) Suneel Kumar told a TV channel.
Murmu's father has pressed the charged against the boy in question and if found guilty, he faces up to seven years in prison.
Following the suicide, IIM-B released a statement expressing 'shock and distress'.
"We have lost a bright young person in the prime of her life. On behalf of the entire IIM-B community, Professor Pankaj Chandra, Director has conveyed the deepest distress of every member of the community to Malini's Parents, family and friends," the statement read.
