When Riddhima Shah, 24, recently bumped into her former boyfriend, it was a weird moment even though she was the one who had initiated the break-up. “It was a common friend’s birthday party, and I didn’t expect him to be there as he works out of town. But when he walked into the hall, I started palpitating. I didn’t know how to react to the situation. No, I wasn’t scared, but it was an unexplainable feeling. I just chose to leave the venue, leaving our common friends speechless,” she says.
“There was a time when we were ‘two bodies, one soul’, and now we stand poles apart with too many misgivings and grudges in between,” Riddhima explains. “After all, we hadn’t separated on a good note. He wanted to take this relationship further, but I was just fed up,” she adds.
For many, despite a cordial break-up, a run-in with the ex is sheer torment.
Ajit (name changed), 25, had to let go of his relationship of three years when his girlfriend succumbed to family pressure. But Ajit is still not completely over her. “We used to work in the same office, but I quit my job following the break-up. Few days back when I went to collect my stuff, I was shocked to see her having a good time with her new colleagues. Sadly, she has managed to move ahead in life, that too in such a short time,” he says.
“I felt betrayed when I recently saw my former boyfriend with the same girl I had thought he shared a ‘chemistry’ with. And when I had confronted him then, his denial left me frustrated. And more so, when I had no proof to prove my accusation. Thus, I would come across as a jealous and uncool person. But I didn’t know how to react when they walked past me holding hands and laughing together at a party,” says Shereen (name changed).
