A teenaged girl in Chandauli district was seriously injured when an unidentified youth threw acid on her on Sunday morning.
The incident took place in the Galla Mandi in Mughalsarai area when the girl was on her way to attend her coaching classes.
The youth came in from behind and threw acid on her way. He escaped even before the passers by could realise what had happened.
The girl has been admitted to a local hospital. She told the police that she did not know the youth but said that she could recognise him.
An FIR has been registered in the case and a manhunt has been lodged to nab the culprit.

3 women end lives in Valley

July 31: As the incidents of suicide, particularly among young ladies, is on the rise in the Kashmir Valley, as many as three women ended their lives on Sunday by consuming poisonous substances, the police said.
A 22-year-old woman consumed some poisonous substance at her home at Panzalpora in northwestern Baramulla district. She was rushed to Srinagar’s SMHS hospital where she died soon later. Another woman from neighbouring Wagila village ended her life in similar fashion whereas a 16-year-old girl of Yaripora in southern Kulgam district too consumed some poisonous substance at her home.

Politician and journalist Inder Jit dead
New Delhi, July 31: Veteran journalist-turned-politician Inder Jit, who played a pivotal role in negotiating the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council Agreement in the 1980s, died here on Sunday after a prolonged illness.
Inder Jit, 84, passed away at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences after suffering a cardiac arrest. He has been fighting cancer for a long time and was admitted to the AIIMS a week ago.
Beginning his career as a journalist with the Hindustan Times in 1948, Inder Jit was attached with several foreign newspapers, including London’s Daily Telegraph and the Times. —PTI

Formal Ulfa talks to start next week

July 31: The formal peace talks between the government and leaders of the United Liberation Front of Assam (Ulfa) are expected to begin here next week.
According to sources the Ulfa leaders led by chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa will arrive next week to present the Central government their charter of demands which was prepared in consultation with the civil society members. They are coming next week to Delhi to present the documents, sources said adding that it would be a starting points for talks with Ulfa.
