[1]A Delhi court has directed former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly to pay over Rs.4 lakh to a travel company which booked his air tickets for international travel between 1998 and 2004.
Additional District Judge Nivedita Anil Sharma said: "The defendant (Ganguly) has clearly admitted the liability to make the payment to the plaintiff although the amount to be paid by him has not been admitted."
"However, in such a situation it would have been appropriate that Ganguly himself calculated the amount to be paid by him," the court observed in an order delivered Saturday.
The court was hearing a petition filed in February 2009 by Trade Wings Limited company on Janpath in New Delhi.
The company filed the suit for recovery of Rs.415,317 and future interest at the rate of 18 percent per annum on the amount to be paid by Ganguly and his wife Dona.
"On request, the plaintiff provided tickets and other facilities to the defendants and their family members, including his daughter," the petition said.
"As per statement of account Aug 31, 2004, an amount of Rs.415,317 was pending towards the defendants. Meanwhile, they paid some amount after a legal notice but later on after a number of requests being sent to the defendants, they did not turn up," said the petition.
The court said: "The plaintiff has been able to show its case only against Sourav Ganguly by producing the relevant documents regarding the admission of liability of Rs.415,317."
"...interest at the rate of 12 percent per annum should be fair and should be paid," the judge said in the order.
