Delhi is witnessing a spurt in crime with the official data showing that the levels of crime in the city have increased in 2011. The data also suggests that the Delhi police is able to solve fewer cases this year as compared to the corresponding data of 2010.
The figures released by the police show that 26,070 cases of crime, which include both heinous and non-heinous cases, were registered at various police stations in the national capital till the end of June in 2011 while the corresponding figure of 2010 stood at 25,619 cases, suggesting an increase of more than 400 cases or little less that two per cent in the first six months of 2011.
Out of the cases registered by the police, data reveals that the instances of attempted murders increased from 169 in 2010 to 187 in 2011, a 10.65 per cent increase over the corresponding period in 2010, while the cases of dacoity too went up to 20. The cases of rioting and motor vehicle thefts also increased from the corresponding period in 2010.
The police statistics show that the percentage of solving crimes like extortion, snatching, fatal accidents etc by the Delhi police, which is on a modernising spree, went down in 2011. In fact, the data reveals that the solution-disposal rate of all crime incidents reported from the city went down to 43.57 per cent in 2011 from 43.83 per cent in 2010.
