This month will hopefully mark the end of autorickshaw overcharges. By this month-end, not only will autos be aided by Global Positioning System devices, but will also print receipts of each trip. This move will prevent autorickshaw drivers from fleecing customers and taking longer routes. The GPS device will not only display the route but also have a panic button for commuters to summon help in case they feel threatened.
Student Shereen Iqbal says, “It will be great if auto drivers charge as per the meter and don’t quote unrealistic fares. Autorickshaws in Mumbai don’t refuse to go to any place, whereas in Delhi it solely depends on where an auto driver agrees or disagrees to go. If implemented well, it will surely discipline Delhi autowallahs. And with receipt printing facility in place, they will not be able to charge us extra, as the transport department will keep a record of the receipts.”
Agrees first year Delhi University student Sanya Batra, she says, “I was once cheated by an auto driver. He quoted `50 initially, but on reaching the destination he demanded `80. Since I was alone, I paid up. Now it’s even worse. First, they charge a lot and then don’t ply by the meter. Secondly, they are nonchalant if you threaten to complain. And as I am bad with routes, the GPS will help a lot.”
Some are concerned if officials will monitor and respond to complaints. Ayesha Sharma, media professional, says, “As always I am skeptical about anything that Delhi government does regarding autorickshaws. Like the electronic meters were tampered and rickshawwallahs still bullied commuters, this system too could have its share of flaws. It remains to be seen how the GPS will be monitored. Auto drivers following a certain route isn’t the problem, the issue is their refusal to go where asked, especially at night or during rains. A little extra charge doesn’t matter as long as these problems are solved.”
Ending on a positive note, she says, “It’s a step which could bring in a change for the better. If nothing else, then at least we will be able to submit the auto bill for reimbursement in our offices.”
