Addiction can make people do strange and bizarre things as was confirmed by the act of a Tihar Jail inmate here. In a bid to satiate his craving for tobacco, the inmate went to the extent of swallowing a whole large pouch to evade security frisking, but his ploy took a rather ugly turn when it all ended causing to him severe medical problems which sent the police and doctors searching for clues.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, when a prisoner at Tihar named Pradeep complained of severe stomachache. The Tihar officials took him to the clinic inside the jail but the doctors there were not able to find what caused the acute pain in his stomach. The doctors then referred the prisoner to the GTB Hospital in Shahdara.
The GTB Hospital doctors investigated his stomach through endoscope and found a big plastic pouch of tobacco in there. The prisoner then revealed to the doctors that he had swallowed the pouch to hide the tobacco from jail officials. The doctors then gave him medicines to extract the pouch from his stomach.
“The medicines made the prisoner vomit the pouch. The prisoner didn’t reveal that he had swallowed the pouch of chewing tobacco. We are now investigating as to how he was able to access the banned substance in jail,” said a Tihar official adding that the condition of the prisoner is stable and he has been taken back to the jail.
The jail sources confirmed that the prisoners often use weird techniques to dodge security personnel during frisking and take banned substances into the jail. They even sell tobacco products to other prisoners at a very high price.
