Nilesh Chauhan, husband of Deepti Chauhan who threw their five-year-old son Siddhesh off a seven-storey building and then jumped off herself, broke down at the court where he was produced on Sunday on charges of abetting the suicide. Nilesh told this newspaper that he would miss his son forever, and that he still cannot come to terms that his son was actually no more.
Weeping openly at the court, Nilesh said: “My son was very cute. I can’t believe he is no more.” When asked what Siddhesh was most fond of, Nilesh said, “He was always hooked to cartoon serials. His favourite cartoon character was Ben Ten.”
Nilesh, however, remained elusive on questions about his wife, and refused to comment about the nature of his relationship with Deepti. On Saturday, Deepti had gone up to the terrace of their building with five-year-old Siddhesh and thrown the child off.
Even as a construction rushed over to the injured body of the child, Deepti jumped off the terrace herself, wounding the man in the process.
The police arrested Nilesh, his brother Bharat and wife Sarla, and his father Kantilal. The four were produced before a magistrate in a Bandra court, who remanded them to police custody till April 21.

April 17: Minutes before Deepti Chauhan threw her five-year-old son Siddhesh off the terrace of the building and then jumped off herself, her husband Nilesh had called up Deepti’s first cousin, telling him that Deepti was angry and requesting him to call her and calm her down. Deepti’s cousin Sandeep Parmar has claimed that Deepti did not answer his calls then, and instead, in a few minutes, Nilesh called him and informed him about the double deaths.
Based on the complaint lodged by Deepti’s father, the police has booked four members of the Chauhan family — Nilesh, his brother Bharat and wife Sarla, and his father Kantilal — for abetting her suicide and harassing her for dowry.
