Trinamul Congress leader and minister of state for shipping Mukul Roy on Friday called on Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi and complained about “violence” being resorted to by CPI(M) cadres in Nandigram. Later, in the company of his colleague and minister of state for health and family welfare Dinesh Trivedi, he also called on Union home minister P. Chidambaram over the same issue.
He told reporters, “I have apprised the CEC of the acts of violence and intimidation by the CPI(M) cadres.” A lawyer accompanied Mr Roy during his meeting with the CEC. Mr Roy’s son Subhrangsu has been accused of assaulting members of the EC when they had gone to erase wall writings on public and private buildings. The area inspector has been placed under suspension at the instance of the EC for failing to apprehend the alleged offender.
Subhrangsu Roy is a Trinamul candidate of Bijpur Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas. Ever since the alleged incident, he has been absconding.
An FIR too was filed against him and 10 of his associates.
