Charging West Bengal's ruling Left Front with misrule and corruption, senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said rule of law would be established after the change of government following the assembly elections.
“Opportunity has come for the people of West Bengal to free themselves from the 34-year misrule and corruption of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front government. Change (in the government) will take place.
This is a historic moment for the state,” Mukherjee told a Congress-Trinamul Congress rally at Debidanga in Matigara-Naxalbari constituency.
“Congress workers gained confidence that a change would come in the state after the strength of the
Left Front was reduced to just 15 MPs from 35 following the Lok Sabha elections in 2009,” Mukherjee, who is also union finance minister, said.
He warned rebel Congress leaders of expulsion if they contested against the party's officially nominated candidates or against any of the officially nominated alliance candidates.
“These rebel Congressmen, who do not respect the party's decision, can be expelled according to the constitution of the Congress party,” he said.
Many voices of dissent were heard in the state after the Congress leadership gave in to Mamata Banerjee's Trinamul Congress and agreed to contest only on 65 seats of the 294 in the state.
Mukherjee said the central government had been providing a lot of funds to West Bengal for different projects, but the state government had failed to utilise the money. —IANS
