Ricky Ponting is widely expected to quit as Australian captain on Tuesday with Cricket Australia scheduling a press conference for a ‘major announcement involving a senior Australian cricketer’.
Reports said Ponting will relinquish his one-day and Test captaincy roles with deputy Michael Clarke tipped to take over, but he is expected to remain available for selection as a player.
The press conference is set for 1pm (0200 GMT).
On Monday, the 36-year-old was given notice that he must decide his future with selectors due to pick the one-day squad for next month's three-match tour of Bangladesh on Wednesday.
Ponting, who let slip Australia's 12-year grasp on the World Cup last week – just three months after their heavy Ashes defeat – has already hinted that he may step down.
He has captained Australia in 77 Test matches for 48 wins – the most of any Test skipper – 16 losses and 13 draws.
In his 227 one-day matches in charge, he returned 163 wins, 50 losses and two World Cups.
