In a move to make parking lots high-tech, the Delhi government on Tuesday constituted a core group headed by the chief secretary Rakesh Mehta, while identifying two sites to be taken as pilot project. The core group has been tasked to suggest ways to make the parking lots IT-enabled and automated with least human intervention.
The Delhi government has taken up two pilot projects — at Bhikaji Cama Place and GK-II — where Web-based parking management would be put in place, which seeks to eliminate human intervention. The decision came following a presentation on the IT-enabled “Parking Manage-ment System” was made before the chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday. The presentation was also attended by Mr Mehta along with MCD commissioner, K.S. Mehra, NDMC chairperson, Parimal Rai, and joint commissioner of police (Traffic) S.P. Garg.
Once the project is executed at two sites identified by the government, Delhi would become the first city in the country having such a parking system, which is already in operation in many cities internationally.
As per the presentation, the IT-enabled “Parking Management System” envi-sages hassle-free parking, with people having the option to pay by using their mobile and getting the availability of space displayed on their phones. A car owner can also park his vehicle by swiping a credit card or smart card at automated kiosks.
