Criticising the recent suicides by farmers in Madhya Pradesh, senior Congress leader and MLA Ajay Singh on Friday said it is a matter of shame for the ruling BJP in the state.
"The BJP came to power in the 2003 assembly elections by making many promises which included bettering the lot of the farmers. Because of the assurances, the farmers' expectations had gone up and when these were not fulfilled, they took recourse to suicide," he said here.
The saddest part is most of the suicides had taken place in Damoh, the home district of state agriculture minister Ram Krishna Kusumuria, Mr Singh said.
He said the BJP government often claimed that villages in Madhya Pradesh is getting electricity for 18 hours a day.
"However, every person knows that no village in the state gets more than seven hours of electricity supply," he said.
