The BJP has compiled its “achievements” under party chief Nitin Gadkari’s one-year tenure, which would be released to its leaders participating at the party’s two-day-long national executive meeting in Guwahati, beginning on January 8. At a time when the ruling Congress has virtually stopped taking BJP chief seriously, the saffron
party has decided to go for the political marketing of its chief. The meeting is also likely to pass a resolution to amend the party constitution to increase the tenure of the BJP chief from the present three years to five years.
Sources said the report card, on glazed papers and published by one of the Sangh Parivar’s think tanks, is likely to be released by Mr Gadkari himself. Even Mr Gadkari’s speech to the participants at the meeting will have a major portion attributed towards the BJP’s achievements (under Mr Gadkari), including the victory in the recently held Bihar Assembly polls, sources disclosed. The report card, it was learnt, will also include party’s accomplishments in its ruled states.
The BJP national executive, apart from passing resolutions on the corruption and other issue, is also likely to pass a resolution to amend the party constitution. A majority section within the party is in favour of increasing the tenure of BJP chief. Also, Mr Gadkari, who took charge of the BJP in December 2009, will hold the post for three years, which will give only few months for his successor to prepare for the 2014 general elections.
Sources said the BJP, which is in an upbeat mood after the Bihar poll results and feedback on its crusade against UPA government on price rise and corruption issue, wants to take no chance for the 2014 general elections. Therefore, a decision on increasing the tenure of party chief is likely to be taken during this meet.
On the corruption issue, including 2G spectrum allocation and Bofors kickbacks, the BJP has already decided to sharpen its attack on the government to keep alive the issue till the Budget Session of Parliament.
The issue of increasing the NDA fold is also likely to be discussed during the meeting, along with illegal immigration from Bangladesh. With Assembly polls in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry scheduled for this year, BJP leaders will also discuss how to increase the party’s performance in these states.
