The crime branch on Thursday decided to re-record the statement of disk jockey Akhil Talreja again after this newspaper reported that Mumbai executive wi-fi was hacked to send IM email. The police was under the impression that the wi-fi connection of Mr Akhil Talreja was not password protected. However, Mr Akhil Talreja on Wednesday had told this newspaper that his wi-fi connection was protected and that terrorists had hacked into it.
“Our connection was secured with a password, but they must have managed to crack it,” Mr Akhil Talreja had said. Additional commissioner of police, crime, Deven Bharti told this newspaper that as per information with the police, the wi-fi connection was totally insecure. “They had disabled the password of the router because of which terrorists could easily use their connection. We will call Mithilesh Talreja and his brother Akhil again and re-record their statements,” he said. According to senior officers, many people disable the password option in their wi-fi connection due to sheer laziness. “For some, the task of entering the password everytime they switch on the connection is quite cumbersome,” an officer had said.
The Kenneth Haywood connection
Crime branch officers said that the router used by both Mr Haywood —whose connection was hacked by the Indian Mujahideen operatives to send an email claiming responsibility for the Jaipur and Delhi blasts of 2008 — and the Talrejas were of the same make. “Both used the routers made by Linsys Company. But that is just a coincidence,” said a senior crime branch officer.
