Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday accused the UPA of shying away from a JPC probe into the 2G spectrum scam and causing the stalemate in Parliament to continue.
"Everybody knows the reason behind the stalemate in Parliament. Our sole demand is a JPC probe so that people know the truth," Mr Mulayam said addressing a party meeting here.
He said the UPA was not conceding to the Opposition demand for a JPC despite the fact that it will have its own chairman and majority in the committee.
Accusing the Congress-led alliance of being mired in a slew of scams including largescale financial irregularities in the run-up to Commonwealth Games, he said it must stop shying away from constituting a JPC for the sake of morality and constitutional tradition.
He also attacked the ruling BSP in Uttar Pradesh, saying the Mayawati government was a step ahead of the Centre when it came to corruption.
"Uttar Pradesh government is one step ahead of the Centre when it comes to corruption. If a thorough probe is conducted a number of ministers and officials in the state will have to go to jail," the SP leader said.
Alleging a scam in the sale of government-run sugar mills in the state, Mulayam said that while 33 units had been disposed of so far, auction date for others was being finalised. He said that sale of government mills will lead to harassment of cane farmers by unit owners.
