Washington, Nov. 3: Ms Nikki Haley, an Indian-American candidate born to immigrants from Punjab, created history by becoming the first woman Governor of South Carolina.
Ms Haley, 38, is the second India-American to be Governor of a US State after Mr Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. Ms Haley defeated her Democratic rival, Mr Vincent Sheehan, after trailing him for some time.

“You know, tomorrow morning there’s going to be a lot of news and a lot of observers that say we made history and in some ways, you can look at me and say we did,” Ms Haley said.
Another woman of Indian origin, Ms Kamala Harris, was holding a razor-thin lead in the election for attorney general of California.
The news was not good for the rest of the other PIO candidates, all six of whom lost the elections to the House of Representatives.
Five of them are Democrats: Mr Manan Trivedi, Ms Ami Bera, Mr Raj Goyle, Mr Ravi Sangisetty and Mr Surya Yalamanchili. Mr Ashvin Lad is the only Republican PIO candidate.
