Ajay-Kajol as modern day Ram-Sita

Will wonders never cease? Sometimes, directors are so taken by their own brilliance that they believe, a reinvention of an epic as interpreted by them will work with the audience. Admittedly, Rajkumar Santoshi has made some good films like Ghayal, Ghatak, Ajab Prem ki Ghazab Kahani.

But his plans to make Ramayan with a modern twist seem to indicate he may have got it all wrong this time. He recently announced that he is looking forward to making Ramayan on a grand scale. He says, “My pre-production team is working on it.”
Well, his interpretation of the epic will certainly raise eyebrows, if not questions whether Ram actually did what Santoshi plans to make his character do. He says the characters in his version of the epic will be flesh and blood ones. (Like the earlier ones weren’t.)
“They will sweat and bleed like normal human beings. If you have noticed Ram never shakes his head much in most of the mythological serials and movies. But my Ram will have his hair flying in the wind.”
Ask him who he plans to rope in to play a Ram with flying, flowing hair, and he says. “I feel Ajay Devgn is apt to play the role. Ram was tanned and so is Ajay. His eyes especially are right for the role.” And as for the heroine, he adds, “I will have to find a heroine. I can’t take a glamorous heroine for the role of Sita. She won’t be dancing in a bikini in the film. They are larger-than-life characters and Kajol has immense dignity. I hope I can convince her,” he says.
