The Delhi police has sounded a red alert in the capital following the attack on Taiwanese nationals outside the Jama Masjid on Sunday in which two tourists were injured.
Joint commissioner (northern range) Karnal Singh, who was present at the site, said that a red alert has been sounded and checking is being conducted at various points.
“Such incidents have taken place in the city earlier and we have always arrested the people behind them. We are confident of nabbing the culprits very soon,’ Mr Singh said.
The Delhi police sources said the security has been increased in all areas of the city and road barricades have been erected at crucial junctures where suspicious vehicles are being checked.
‘We are verifying all the suspicious vehicles and all measures are being taken to nab the accused,” a senior Delhi police official said.
The police sources also said that the checking has been increased at all entry points to the capital from neighbouring states.
The police has also beefed up security at various market places and other critical installations in the city to thwart any attempt by terrorists to strike.
“We are not leaving any stone unturned to keep the city safe from terrorist elements. Extra policemen have been deployed in markets and efforts are being made to nab the accused,” a police official said.
According to an eyewitness description, the attackers were fair complexioned and tall youth and were not wearing any masks on their faces.
“One of the attackers was wearing a green T-shirt while the other was wearing a black raincoat. He was also carrying a bag carrying weapons,” said Salim, an eyewitness.
Meanwhile, parking of vehicles outside Common-wealth Games venues and iconic buildings in the city has been banned in the wake of firing outside Jama Masjid in Old Delhi on Sunday morning.
An order was issued in this regard by lieutenant-governor Tejendra Khanna on Sunday evening.
“Parking of vehicles outside Games venues and iconic and important buildings have been banned,” a senior police official said.
The police will also check vehicles passing through these areas.
