Chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday called upon the police to dispel the sense of general insecurity in the capital, while asserting that she wanted elected representatives to have some say in policing. The Delhi Assembly on Monday took up a discussion on the issue of deteriorating law and order in the capital, after the police commissioner Y.S. Dadwal’s presence was ensured in the House.
Though the Delhi Assembly was scheduled to take up the discussion on law and order issue on Friday, the House had to be adjourned after the members protested the absence of Mr Dadwal in the officers’ gallery.
Initiating the discussion on the issue, senior BJP leader Jagdish Mukhi launched a scathing attack on the city police by claiming that a sense of insecurity has been prevailing in the city amidst rise in number of cases of murder, rape, dacoity, chain-snatching etc. Prof. Mukhi charged that the crime victims are often harassed by the police and it is tough to get an FIR registered. “Now that the government claims to have brought in e-governance, why cannot the police register an FIR on the basis of complaints sent by victims via e-mail,” he asked.
In her reply to the discussion, Ms Dikshit said that she had raised the demand with the Union home ministry to give statutory power to thana level (headed by an MLA) and district level police committee (headed by an MP). “The elected representatives should have a say in policing,” she said,
