After a long day at work, don’t we all wish for a rib-tickling comedy session to unwind? From stand-up comedy shows and Karaoke nights to musical comedy plays, it seems humour is catching on big, especially among young working professionals looking for a “hilarious” break.
Says Raghav Mandava, Delhi-based comedian who also organises comedy shows, “When I started a year back, there weren’t as many takers as there are today. Often, young professionals between 23 to 30 years of age come to these shows. We organise comedy nights either on Fridays or Sundays so that people can relax after a tiring week or unwind before starting the new week.”
Going by the popularity of the comedy nights, it seems the hunt for humorous, laughter-filled evenings has begun, with many youngsters look forward to comedy as a break from regular dinner parties or movies. “I was tired of watching movies and going for dinners after work. For the last few weeks my friends and I hang out at various places where comedy nights are held. It all started when my friends took me for a Vir Das comedy night sometime back and after that, I now look forward to comedy nights at least once a week,” says Sneha Singh, a media professional.
It’s not just humorous weekends. Experts suggest that weekdays are probably the best time to cash in on the comedy business.
Says Hemant of Howzatt at Galaxy Hotel, “We started the concept of Comedy nights only sometime back, and now plan to organise them every Monday. We wanted to give something different on the first night, so we presented a comedy night with Karaoke, but we’ve decided on stand-up comedy in the forthcoming weeks. Since most people have different plans for weekends, we chose Monday for comedy nights as young corporate professionals look forward to something humorous and relaxing on weekdays.”
For many, comedy nights are a perfect way to get away from the hustle bustle. Mandeep Singh, a regular at many comedy nights, shares, “Be it comedy plays or stand-up comedy nights, I feel they are a perfect way to relax.”
